How Do I Obtain A Burn Permit?

Burn permits are not issued by either the Kingston or Union Fire Districts but can be obtained by visiting the South Kingstown Public Safety Complex and speaking with a dispatcher. The Complex is located at: 1790 Kingstown Road Wakefield, RI 02879 Phone: (401) 783-3321

Why Do I See The Fire Trucks Driving Around All The Time?

The Department applies a high standard of training and competence to all members, especially to those cleared to drive. Drivers are constantly found out and about in District improving their knowledge of our response area. They look for things like hydrant locations, low hanging wires, construction of buildings, response routes, and areas unable to accommodate a fire truck. By always striving to improve our knowledge of the fire district, we are able to improve response times and on-scene efficiency.

How Big Is The Department?

The Department operates 12 apparatus and strives to keep a membership of 20-30 active firefighters. The Department consists of 1 Chief, 2 Deputy Chiefs, 1 Captain, 3 Lieutenants, and roughly 15 firefighters.

The Department operates a total of 12 apparatus: Engine 8, Engine 9, Rescue 6, Ladder 2, Special Services 4, Boat 4, Decon 4, SK Decon 1, SK Decon 2, Car 4, Car 8, and Car 9.

Why Does It Look Like People Live At The Station?

It’s because we do. The Department is the only live-in volunteer department in RI and 1 of only a handful in the entire country. We have the ability to house up to 10 full time residents at the station. Residents live rent and utilities free in return for their services to the District. They are required by contract to respond to all emergencies while in the station unless injured or ill.

How Many Calls Do You Do Per Year?

Call volumes vary from year to year but KFD averages 700-900 calls a year. You can view up-to-date statistics on run numbers here.

How Often Do You Train?

The Department holds scheduled trainings on Wednesdays from 7PM-9PM and Sundays from 9AM-11AM. Personnel often train throughout the week in addition to the scheduled sessions. The Department averages 2200-2500 hours of training a year.

You can view up-to-date statistics on training hours here.
